Week 9: Space and Art

 Space and art

The intersection of space and art is as old as history. From the initial inspiration of the cosmos the sun and moon and all that is encapsulated within. The entendre of space immediately piqued my interest, in the way space can be a physical outer worldly thing but also the intermediate material that makes up life as we know it. The space that surrounds us is a vast and grand concept that to most is easily consumable. However, after listening to talks such as Ivana Dama’s, I began to question what it really meant to take up space. As Ivana pointed out both physical items and sound and light can take up space. This shows the ultimate gallery that space is for human life and expression.

All works must be put into the space around us in some way whether that be physical like classical interpretations or digital like the modern landscape so often does. However, the more descriptive and interesting intersection is the space we know as what's outside of our planet. I immediately thought of the film 2001 a Space Odyssey and the precedence it set in the film and storytelling industry. Not only this but also the depiction of space and otherworldly travel in such an early time. This era was especially important for space and moon travel and this very obviously influenced the art that was created at the time. As just decades earlier the first man was put on the moon and it was seen as possible. NASA being government funded shaped the art scene in ways still being seen today. With styles characterized as futuristic and post-modern being derived from this point it time. This film's timeless nature shows the human urge to leave Earth and innate curiosity for space.
