Event 1: Yolande Harris
Event 1: Yolande Harris
Event 1 Blog post
This past week I attended an art talk by Yolande Harris.
Harris is a visual, sound, and video artist from UC Santa Cruz who largely focuses on natural sounds and visuals. Ranging from sounds of oceans and tornados to animal noises and oceanic creatures. I searched a few rooms before I found the EDA where the talk was being held and once entering, the tone of Harris’s work was immediately conveyed. As you walk into a low-lit room with colored lights in the front on a projector and on the screen was a moving visual of what I later learned was light flowing through deep jungle in a foreign place.
Yolande Harris began her talk by introducing her earlier works where she largely challenged people's senses and their perception of place, with headphones and natural bodies of water giving a new perspective on GPS and sensing the world around them.
The next piece she introduced was about the Mississippi and natural phenomena. She had a visual and a recording of a tornado to match which once again provided a unique perspective.
This was a common theme with the work of Yolande as they continued on to `their most recent works incorporating whale noises and other oceanic sounds in contrast to various places, from docks and waterly spots to desserts and festivals. The latter shifts the way one's brain processes wave noises with visuals other than the sea. I was especially moved by the pieces with the sea life videography and the visuals that came out of works like ‘Vertigo and the sound portal’.
A Pod of Orcas Swim Together in Antarctica — Yolande Harris
The entirety of the talk was very sublime and peaceful. From the visuals of orcas swimming together to the softness of Harris’s speech, the event makes me excited for the next.
